  3.     If more Americans understood the devastating effects of
  4. head injuries, they would not question the need for
  5. motorcycle-helmet laws (LAW, Dec. 19). A head injury can cause
  6. irreversible changes in personality, intellectual capacity and
  7. vocational status. Physical, emotional and behavioral problems
  8. are not uncommon. The effects are frightening to witness and
  9. draining for family, friends and the survivors themselves -- not
  10. to mention the financial strain. Is it really worth that kind
  11. of risk to have the feeling of the wind blowing through your
  12. hair?

  16.     Arguments made by cyclists for not wearing a helmet often
  17. have to do with their sense of a reduced ability to hear and
  18. see. Can't a clever designer produce a protective helmet with
  19. openings on the sides to improve hearing, as well as slits
  20. adjacent to the eyes to increase the range of vision, that would
  21. provide adequate protection? There could be air channels built
  22. in so one could feel the breeze. Why not redesign the helmet?
