- LETTERS, Page 6Mandated Cycle Helmets
-
- If more Americans understood the devastating effects of
- head injuries, they would not question the need for
- motorcycle-helmet laws (LAW, Dec. 19). A head injury can cause
- irreversible changes in personality, intellectual capacity and
- vocational status. Physical, emotional and behavioral problems
- are not uncommon. The effects are frightening to witness and
- draining for family, friends and the survivors themselves -- not
- to mention the financial strain. Is it really worth that kind
- of risk to have the feeling of the wind blowing through your
- hair?

- Arguments made by cyclists for not wearing a helmet often
- have to do with their sense of a reduced ability to hear and
- see. Can't a clever designer produce a protective helmet with
- openings on the sides to improve hearing, as well as slits
- adjacent to the eyes to increase the range of vision, that would
- provide adequate protection? There could be air channels built
- in so one could feel the breeze. Why not redesign the helmet?
